Pete, if it is not too much trouble, you can disconnect the tranny from the engine.. Do you have the factory tool to compress the clutch, and the ring that holds the fingers of the pressure plate? If you do not have that, then it will take considerable effort to remove the tranny. You will have to lift the engine while prying the gear box away.
Once you completed that, then it is easy to remove the rear cover, tap off the hubs and check the Ring gear and pinion. This is where the 900 transmassion usually fail. The pinion bearings become worn, and a bearing falls out and gets jamb somehwere and breaks teeth off a gear. Also people who do not know how to operate the tranny properly, throw the shifter into second gear, and ruin the synchro. At that point, grinding occurs..
How much do they charge for the tranny and what state?
