Classic Saabs are getting on collectors radar screens

There's a great write up on the Saab owners convention from last summer in the April Hemmings Motor news. This is the second time Saabs have appeared there in just the last year. I've said it before but I think Saabs are on the verge of becoming bonifide collector cars for a number of reasons. First I think there's a real "been there done that" sense when it comes to American muscle cars of the fifities and sixties. Every car show in the country is chock-a-block with them. Prices seem to be going flat on them and people are looking for something different. I've noticed it's the unusual cars that get the most attention at the shows. Someone brought a 1969 Subaru to our local car show last year and people thronged around it. Cars don't get much more unusual than 93/96's so I expect their value could go up very quickly. At it will take is one or two selling at some silly price at a major auction and prices could take off (look at how fast VW bus prices have gone up in a very short time). Second, if gas goes back up to $4.00 (and it will sooner or later) people are going to be looking for fun cars that get decent mileage. Finally, since almost everything from the fifities and sixties has gotten so expensive, peoplem are going to have to look to the 70's and 80's to find affordable fun cars. The only wild card is the current economic crisis, but if you want a classic Saab now is definately the time to buy one. The days of dirt cheap C900s aren't going to last much longer.
