the main drive pulley on the crank shaft is "shock mounted" with a rubber core between the sheave and part that bolts onto the shaft. (at least in earlier models) When the rubber gives out, the sheaves can move (usually towards the firewall). sometimes you can pry them back with a bar levered against the firewall. If that helps, you may want to look into replacing the pulley. 30 or 32mm socket on a long breaker bar fits the nut.
It is normal for the alternator to bounce around when running. Since it is "shock mounted" the only way to avoid it is to use really really good matched sets of belts. Don't be tempted to over-tighten the belts...a bouncing alternator is fine, but tight belts will wipe out 16 year old bearings in a hurry.
