When I had my dealership I had an '84 900T (with only 92,000 miles) with the auto. The auto shifted perfectly but had a very bad leak when running--the car had sat for a long time. So my part-time mechanic pulled the trans and essentially rebuilt it. He got it back in and it still leaked so he had to pull it AGAIN, found the one o-ring he'd missed, put it back in and it worked fine. This guy's full time job is working on Audis/VW's for a dealer-he's an excellent mechanic who's never failed us working on a wide range of cars including Saabs. So I drove the car for a few months and eventially sold it. Six months later I talked to the person who bought the car and the transmission had failed. So my point is that if a professional and very skilled mechanic has this much trouble with a perfectly functioning auto with only 92K, how do you think a non-professional will do with one that's starting to fail? Even professionally rebuilt C900 transmissions can failed prematurely--I just don't think it's a job for amatures.
