Re: fuel tank swap Posted by Justin VanAbrahams [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: fuel tank swap, Camm ![]() |
It should work out fine, but check to be sure the '83 has an irregularly shaped under trunk area instead of a perfectly square one. Saab changed the floor pan at some point in the '80s to accommodate larger fuel tanks, and you can't put one of the larger tanks under a car that is not designed to accept it. You can see the different - the "early" cars have a virtually perfectly rectangular tank, whereas the "later" cars have a bulge on their rear side.
Also, there may be issues with the fuel pump setup... I have absolutely no personal knowledge, but I've heard it discussed that the later pumps won't work with CIS - either the pressure or volume is too high. No experience, just stuff I've read.
The issue is that the early CIS will not directly accommodate an LH-style pump - it will physically fit and mount fine, but the effective depth is different and the LH pump will not be able to get at the last of the fuel. On my 16v-converted 1980 5-door I'm using an LH pump with the original tank (it's the old, rectangular-style one) and I will "run out of gas" not long after the fuel light comes on. Not a big deal, really, just something to know.
