Thank you very nuch Siegfried for your advice. that is just what I needed to know.
With my 8 valve 900T, an auto electrician replaced two starter motors and I still had an intermittent problem with exactly the same symptoms(I had to park on a hill all the time as I never knew when it was going to strike again). Exactly the same symptoms - no click or any sound on start up. It turned out to be the wiring between the ignition key and the starter.
This time I am not going to pay for two starter motors only to find the same problem again. This is why I needed to know how to isolate the problem to the starter/solenoid, the wiring, or the lead from the battery to the starter and you have given me the advice I need.!!!
