The non-catalyst bit is important - I am fairly certain that most UK cars that didn't have a converter also didn't have an O2 sensor. That's going to be important since a US-spec ECU probably won't run a car properly without an O2 sensor. Although running a -573 ECU implies you've already got a US-spec ECU, so maybe it doesn't matter. :)
Could be something on the '91 failed and someone threw in LH 2.2 to make it go. I've seen stranger things. Do you have a crank sensor or a Hall Effect sensor on the distributor?
I've never tested the LH conversion with A/C, but there is no reason is won't work. It won't work like it should in an LH 2.4 car (with load compensation and such) but it'll work like it does in the current car, which gets the job done.
