Joe,
I'm sorry I've never been there but pls refer to the 2nd page at Towsend's: turn ignition off, shorten the pins in the diagnostic socket, ignition on, break the U-jump inserted into the diagnostic socket, read the flashes.
I do think that's smth about the temperature and-or humidity if it works almost fine the whole year but some summer months. EPC tells that all parts (e.g. hydraulic unit) should be the same for all versions but the ECU that was replaced with another version in M1990 model year (yep, I do know that older cars also worked with another qty of teeth on the aperture disks on the wheels but that doesn't matter here at all). Probably it's worth relocating the ECU or to add some sorta shield that will defend and protect it from heat coming from... somewhere (I vote for exhaust parts that cause this issue to happen). Or even drill couple of holes there on the ECU body (achtung! you'd really know what you're doing there if you decide to do this mod) add some computer fans, but don't forget adding some air filters to stop dirt and dust coming there (ask you wife or girlfriend for winter tights, these are the universal air filters, NO KIDDING).
Zig
P.S.
You can even move to Mark IV ABS system taken from late version of 9K saab. It's 4 channel and has more diagnostic capabilities.
