you need to put power on the contact where the yellow wire is on the solenoid, doing that does two things, 1) it tells the solenoid to extend the force the starter gear to engage the flywheel, and two completes the contact from the external FAT RED wire on the start to the starter motor itself. The easy way to do this is with a long screwdriver that is INSULLATED ON THE SHAFT and a jumper cable from the battery to the screw driver just below the handle and above the insullation. Yes it may should overkill compared to a piece of 4 or 6 gauge solid wire... but it keeps your hands and arms above the intake manifold. pull the connector off the tab on the solenoid and that is where you want to apply +12v, by what ever means you use. You can do it this way or you can use that wire that should also have insullation on it.
If you do the short as above or another method and the starter spins but does not engage... you need a new starter (or the solenoid and then split it apart and replace with new solenoid).
Curious, is this a recurring problem or?
