AC Working, but only when relay jumped?

I have an 85 spg with the 16 v engine and what appears to be the more basic AC setup(no pins to ignition, timer, etc). I have pressure, the overheat switch is OK, the dash switch is OK, and I assume the frost switch is OK since from what I read it is inline with the low pressure switch.
I pulled apart the relay, but it doesn't do anything (pulled cover while watching it work). I could push the main contact plate to close the circuit for the thermal fan, but the compressor would not engage. When I jump from the 12v dash switch to the compressor clutch it works great, fan is even on. The compressor even cycles on and off (which i didn't realize it would do).
So what gives? The only thing I can see that doesn't work is the wide open throttle shutoff switch. So is this method safe to leave?
I also did notice in the sight glass that when on it bubbles a little bit and is not completely clear like the manual recommends, but with fill up of R12 costing so much can I just leave it until it quits? Thanks.
