When the clip is at the limit of its travel (limited by the slot in the carrier) it's far enough to pull the shaft out. It can be a pain to get that shaft out - every so often I've found a really stubborn one and it doesn't work out. Generally, though, you just open the circlip and pull the shaft out and you're done.
If you reach the point where it's just not happening, put everything back together, put the car on the ground, and loosen the axle nut. Then take it all back apart, remove the hose clamp on the inner boost, and get and pull the entire axle out.
Remember to keep things clean - remove all the old grease, clean out the CV cup and bearing and don't contaminate it when putting it back together.
This is not the most fun Saab job.
