Buy a special light or "node" that attaches to the injector plug or just buy a simple 12 volt low wattage lamp and attach the leads to the injector plug.
Have someone turn over your engine (lead from coil removed) and you should see the node light flash on/off.
If you have a hall sensor/igniter - you might check them as well since they may be causing a misfire.
If you want to check the actual injector to see if it functions - first - remove the injector and make or get a harness that will clip to the injector's plug that you can run 12 volts to.
Then buy a 3 watt saloon bulb - you know the kind that is in the trunk or in the over head map light.
This bulb has to be wired in series on the plus side of your voltage source -(I use my battery charger- but a battery would work)
You should not operate your injectors off the vehicle by applying a 12 volt source directly. They will burn out.
If the injector is opening when applying the moderated voltage it should be an audible "click."
I clean my injectors with a fuel rail and injector cleaner using the above procedure.
Attach the injector to the rail as it would be in the car. Fill the rail with injector cleaner. Apply pressure with a bicycle pump at one end of the rail and then open up the injector with your 12 volt source.
This will hold the injector open, and the spray should come out in a fine mist-like cone.
If they are really plugged it may take a few tries. I have found when they are towards the end of their life you can get the solenoid to work by rapping the injector on the table lightly.
Finally check your O2 sensor and make sure it is not so fouled that it can't send a proper signal causing the engine to run rich.
in fact investing in a DVM and Bentley will help you with all these procedures
