Bob,
Crank sensor gives spark and turns on p/fump. If Jetronic doesn't see any impulses coming from this sensor then it won't turn the fuel pump on. The sensor itself can be more alive then ever but wires, pins, sockets - everything on the way from sensor to ignition amplifier and fuel ecu can make you nervous.
You can find your sensor either in the ignition distributor (mostly on turbos and early n/a's) or behind crankshaft pulley.
Bad temp sensor and AMM (when I name a part or unit I also mean its wire harness) can also cause no-start-issue, but 'completely dead' engine usually leads either to completely dead engine or just a crankshaft sensor. With bad temperature or Air signals car usually starts but very laaaazy.
