All you need to do if you do remove both sides is to remove the back cover, and support the differential and ring gear while you reinstall the drivers and their bearing housings. So long as the shims and driver bearing housings stay in the right place, and with the right transmission, and you torque the bearing housings to spec, the differential will be where it is supposed to be for the ring and pinion not to destroy one another.
