You are correct, it should just escape through the drain hole if that drain is patent, not clogged. There is also a pressure vent on the rear cover of the differential. Imagine that the drain hole is clogged and the pressure vent is also clogged, that could put more pressure against the old ATF side seal then it's good for and there's your situation. You should clear (or check) the vent and drain in a fashion that doesn't pressurize the seals. Putting ATF in the differential will probably work OK especially if you change it often. It's really too light for those gears and lacks the pressure resisting properties of gear oil or even motor oil but short of replacing the pinion seals that's all you can do. As for replacing the pinion seals, that's a major task requiring a hydraulic press, a big vice, the SAAB pinion holding fixture, a big special socket and about 175 ft/Lbs. of torque wrenching and that's on top of the complete tear down and rebuild of the unit.
You should make every effort to determine whether there really is gear oil in the ATF before investing too much in a solution, smells can be misleading (insert wise crack here). Good luck
