Smells CAN be misleading, and that's why I'm not entirely convinced there IS gear oil making its way forwards.
Also, an old hot rod buddy of mine mentioned to me that back in the day, Chrysler had a bulletin on (he thought) old Torqueflite boxes, mentioning that if the customer complained of shifts being too hard, to add 4oz of 80-90 to the ATF (!) and that'd smooth things out. I'm not going to try that anytime soon, but, it's worth mentioning, it shifts absolutely fine. At the risk of making this post too long..
I've noticed that the 1-2 shift is firmer with the shifter in 2 versus D.. this makes no sense to me, I have the factory manual for it and I don't see anything changed in the hydraulic circuit that should make it firmer. All it does is block the 2-3 shift valve. That makes me scratch my head.
It's not really SOFT in D though, just firmer in 2. 2-3 upshift is perfect and all other behavior is fine too. It definately doesn't have a slipping issue, the fluid isn't burnt, was changed regularly.. last change was this spring, IIRC, and it's still a nice bright red.
I'll probably unclog the drain, if you can give me a heads up as to where it is, and change the ATF and keep an eye on it. Thanks for your help, man!
