1988 900s, 16 valve, 5 spd., 173K miles
I bought the EMPI assembly for $89 last year along with the new ID mainly because of the mileage on my 900 and the fact that the tripod bearing, rubber boot and grease pack bought seperately wasn't any different then buying the whole CV axle unit with all of the stuff I needed. I figured since I was installing a new ID, I'd go the whole route. I replaced worn ball joints, sway bar bushing and an inner tie-rod while I was at it. When I got to the driver's side, the tripod bearing was in good shape so I installed a new rubber boot and repacked it when I did the swap. I also replaced a loose tie-rod on that side and the sway bar bushing while I was at it. I replaced the carrier bearings, o-rings and oil seals in the differential ID covers on both sides while I was in there. Make sure you keep track of the shims on each side when you pull the differential covers and put them back exactly as they came out. Nearly 1 year later, the new stuff on the passenger side and the ID swap with a new boot and grease repack on the driver's side are working fine. With a new $300 ID, personally, I would at least use a new tripod bearing with it. So in my opinion, you made a good decision getting the EMPI CV assembly which includes everything. I hope that helps and good luck with your project. Keep Saabing!!!
