about 3 years ago cost $750 ( not including the labor to put it in of course ). This makes it seem sort of crazy to spend more on just the primaries . My old mechanic might have charged me quite a bit more if I had asked him to put some different gears in it . Either that or he would have just ridiculed the suggestion . The only thing I had heard about at the time to avoid a too short first gear was a 4 speed and my mechanic said " it will scream on the highway " . The other wow is hearing of any of these cars with a box that has a " too tall first gear " ( as Hans said about his 4 speed notchback ) . This seems almost impossible considering that first ( and second ) are so short on my car that I can start out in second without even slipping the clutch that much . Does this mean that Hans' 4 speed's first gear is almost like my second , because it seems like if my second was a little lower it would be no problem to start out in it on a regular basis . I'm actually considering starting out in second ( from a stop ) more frequently . I already do it consistently when not coming to a complete stop and still rolling at a couple of mph . Making it a habit from a start seems pretty tough on the clutch , but as it is these clutches seem to last forever . Maybe if I installed some #4 primaries I could use second gear as my first without clutch problems , tolerate some more revs in fifth on the highway and start a side business pulling tree stumps with first gear to help support my Saab habit .
