If you try to use rpms as your guide, then make sure you have the correct size tires, and that the rpm gauge is accurate. Or, look at the label on the gearbox and see if it has 55804 or 55806 on it, and that will tell if it is the real deal. Those gearboxes didn't come out until 1989, as I recall. Supposedly, a 1988B SE whatever the heck that is could come equipped with that box.
And, someone could have added the gears to a stock box as well....in which case you would have to try the tire size/rpm tests....
Or as Cmyles mentioned in a previous post, the ring and pinion in a 1988 box could be changed to a 1989 or later, and keep the 1988 intermediate gears -- that would also make the gears taller.
