The primaries are pretty robust whether they are 6, 7 or 8s. It is the pinion bearings that start the path to failure of the gearboxes, or one of the things that turn them into mush.
I think the early model intermediate gears are not as robust as the later ones. The ratios are different, and therefore, different diameters. The earlier intermediate gears are smaller in diameter, so they are not as meaty as the later gears, but the ratio coupled with the later ring and pinion yield a faux #8 type ratio.
