actually, it's often easier to take the tripod bearing off the other end of the axle and slide off the inner boot and then put the new outer boot on from that end. if the CV joint stayed free of sand and other bad stuff and still has lots of grease in it... the tripod end uses a traditional circlip with holes in the end rather than the flat smooth setup on the CV joint. you can get the bands that clamp on the boot in a kit at eEuroparts too. if you don't have the tool you can use a pair of wire cutters, come in from one side and squeeze, then do the other, go back and forth and you'll be fine. I did this for years (SAAB Master buddy showed me...) and finally got the tool for $30. The tool is really nice.
Also, you only have to pull the Upper ball joint bolts and then yank the knuckle out, it will fall towards you and then towards the tie rod end. Works very well.
