Electrical continuity of clockspring out of the car

Thanks Landjet for the reply. I did read your posts (I always start with a site search), but my wires were never crimped, pinned or otherwise damaged. Like you, the plastic bearing shoulders were worn away (inner was completely gone), so I had a loose steering wheel. The clock spring assembly physically looks good and intact except when I test continuity from stationary side to wheel side of the wiring assembly; it appears as the airbag wires are shorted together.
It is pretty obvious to me that there is a short in the coiled wire inside. While I would really like confirmation that the two airbag wires should be electrically isolated from each other, my question was more pointed to airbag longevity and the likelihood the airbag is going to perform. A web search of airbag lifespan indicated an airbag lifespan was never intended to be greater than 15 years...
