Sky,
I've always changed my engine oil every 3000 miles and filter every other oil change (so 6000 miles) and have a bunch of really happy SAAB classic 900 16 valve turbo cars. Changing the oil regularly before it loses it's lubrication properties is especially important for the turbocharger and the valve train components. Turbos are destroyed quickly in the absence of effective lubrication and, at the same time, are responsible for much of the heat that breaks down your oil. If your sending unit is not leaking now then leave it alone. I avoid Teflon tape for such applications just because, during installation and removal, it tends to shred and small strips could enter the circuit. I've found that #2 non-hardening Permatex Form-a-gasket is a remarkably effective thread and gasket sealant. Thread sealant won't interfere with the electrical conduction required of such sensors, there's still plenty of metal to metal contact between the male and female threads. Glad to hear that you got that leak under control.
