As shown (perhaps unclearly) in the exploded view drawing (taken from Saab's Electronic Parts Catalog) posted earlier, there is no mechanical advance mechanism in a 16V distributor: no weights, springs, etc. Saab's Technical Data manual, which lists the timing curves for most c900 distributors, also shows that there is no such component.
On a 16V Turbo dist., if the vac. capsule is installed AND there is NO vac line attached to the capsule, then the Hall sensor position will remain fixed. Do not run the car without the capsule installed on the dist. (or without otherwise fixing the Hall sensor so it cannot move).
If you are having trouble with the signal, then the plug is a common culprit. The wiring from the sensor should be adequately shielded.
If you need another dist. to swap out, any of the following LH2.2 distributors are plug and play on an '85 with MEGASQUIRT *IF* you are using it to also control timing**:
85-88 16V Turbo (capsule attached; no vac line)
86-87 16V Non-turbo (these have no vac capsules)
Any '89+ Turbo (LH2.4) distributor will also work if you also change to the newer, square connector. NO '88+ non-turbo distributor will work for '85T + MS, as there is no Hall sensor inside (sensor is at the crank on non-turbo LH2.4).
**This fitment info is specific to an '85T with Megasquirt WITH spark control and does not apply to 16V Turbos with stock fuel and timing systems. Do NOT install a non-turbo 86-87 16V distributor on any 16V Turbo with stock fuel and timing systems!
