I took the 85 distributor out and replaced it with a standard turbo one and got the car starting much better already. The 85 turbo distributor (# 0 237 507 001) does have some sort of spring loaded mechanical advance built into it, BUT its not supposed to be functional. Mine was missing one of the springs and the screw that locks out the mechanical advance vibrated out. So I was running with a mechanical advance even with the hall sensor locked in place, which is why I was having trouble starting, and why I seemed to have an excessive amount of knock under boost.
