tz,
You need thread sealant (thread sealer) on bolts that penetrate a cavity which holds oil or another fluid. The three slave cylinder bolts screw into holes that go all the way through the casting and if those bolts aren't sealed oil will escape (really). Thread locking fluid, e.g. Loctite, should be used on fasteners that exhibit a tendency to come loose in service or bolts which, if accidentally loosened in service, would pose a hazard. There are various types of thread locking fluid including high strength (red) and medium strength (blue). There are also low viscosity locking fluids that will flow into an assembled bolt and nut by capillary action and fluids for locking bushings and sleeves in place. The large nuts on the main and input shaft of our five speed transmissions are examples of fasteners which both tend to work loose and pose a hazard (to the unit) if loosened while in service so I use high strength locking fluid on those. Flywheel bolts should be locked, I use the medium strength on those. If torqued properly they don't tend to loosen but would cause real trouble if they ever did and the medium strength locking fluid is adequate to prevent that. Medium strength locking fluid can be undone with moderate torque. High strength locking fluid requires high torque and sometimes the application of heat to undo. I find that Permatex #2 non-hardening sealant works great for sealing most bolts and gaskets and I use Permatex "Aviation" sealant a lot also. While they have a few recommended applications I generally avoid RTV sealants for a number of reasons. Locking fluids will (usually) seal threads but if sealing is the only concern it is unwise to use locking fluid. It complicates future disassembly and (in my experience) is not as reliable at sealing threads as is genuine thread sealant. So put sealant (#2 Permatex) on those little slave cylinder bolts and blue, med. strength, Loctite on the flywheel and clutch cover bolts.
Torque spec's. assume that the fastener (bolt) is clean and lightly oiled. I figure that the wet Loctite behaves similar to a light lubricant on a clean bolt and use the listed torque spec. (Maybe that's naive but I have never had a problem.) If it starts to "set" before you finish torquing that's a whole 'nother thing of course. Thread sealant is pretty unlike light oil but most of the bolts you'll be using that on have a pretty broad tolerance for correct torque. Since the sealant is thick and sticky your bolts will be slightly under-torqued (using the book spec.) but probably not enough to matter (these are mostly cover bolts and such).
Use anti-seize on exhaust and other fasteners that are likely to corrode badly. I smear the shafts of ball joint bolts with it because they tend to corrode and become seriously stuck in their bore over time. I can't really think of any applications for it on a clutch job (top of my head). It does not work as a thread sealant. Sometimes it's employed as a barrier to galvanic reaction of a ferrous fastener in a non ferrous bore but there is a lot to consider with that application.
Hope that answers your questions.
