Brian,
You may want to do some additional research regarding a failing/faulty water temp sensor also referred to as a NTC sensor. This sensor controls fuel mixture by tell the ECU the car is cold so needs more gas to run rich and as the engine warms sends a signal to lean out the gas mixture. Sounds like the car is getting a signal when warm that it is actually cold so it is running richer rather than leaner. The part is less than $20 Bosch and about $13 in a Febi from Europarts. I would just recommend going with a quality supplier if not OEM.
Interested to see how others weigh in on this issue. All the best!
