embarrassing question cv boot

I just noticed a torn outer CV boot on drivers side of wife's 86 900s with 170000 miles. This is embarrassing because I am hoping to be cheap here. I am planning on undoing the clamp and compressing the two halves together to keep dirt out. Here's my thinking.. I had a Chrysler Town and Country that had a split boot. My mechanic said because of labor it would only cost a little more to replace the half axle (which came with boots included) and to take my chances and just wait till the axle wears because of lack of grease or dirt introduced. After two years I traded it in and it never seemed to be a problem. I did do the compress trick to that. So I know I sound cheap but I can't afford to pay to have the boot done right now. Am I signing a death certificate to the car for not immediately addressing the boot issue? Or can I wait and take my chances?
