You need to take the axle out. With the car on the ground, stick something under the upper control arm (between it and the body). You can use an old brake pad, two sockets, a piece of wood. You need to take the spring's pressure off the assembly to remove the ball joints. Loosen the big nut, jack up the car, remove the upper ball joint from its control arm, undo the hose clamp on the inner boot. pull the axle out the back.
The outer joint has a snap ring holding it to the axle. It also may need some light hammer tapping to get it off.
Really it isn't that hard, just messy. Takes me about an hour.
