What I'm trying to point out is that the drive shafts (the solid metal, no-moving parts bit with splines on the ends that the outer CV and tripod bearing mount to) are interchangeable, other than you need to match them up for your inner drivers. Whether you have the larger (and later) inner drivers, or the smaller (earlier 8v) inner drivers.
If your inner drivers on the target car are good, and the outer CVs, too, then the driveshafts you have will be just fine. Other wise, just check the inner drivers that they match on the donor and target cars. If they do, you're good to go, otherwise, you'll have to rebuild the ones from the target car.
When Saab changed the inner drivers for the 16v, they also changed the spline size on the shaft for the inner drivers (they didn't change the outer CV end).
Based on your original post, you're probably best to re-build the 85's driveshafts. At the very least (because you don't want to do all this work again in 6 months time), they should be cleaned up, new boots installed, and re-greased. You know they will go into the transmission, and they will go into the 88- hub without issue.
