Marc,
There's lots (and lots) of possibilities here but your story is consistent with a car that has a dead battery resulting from a charging system fault. When the alternator isn't charging the battery you can drive the car around for a while until the battery finally goes dead and then it will sputter and die and refuse to restart. Loose or corroded electrical connections in the charging system are the most common causes of charging failure. A battery that is unable to take a charge or an alternator that isn't producing current are other common faults. C900 alternators must be grounded with a wire as they are rubber mounted and it's very common for that ground wire to get broken. When that happens the alternator will not produce any current and you will run on your battery until it's depleted. Of course the red "Battery" light on the dashboard should be lit if there is a charging system problem but there are various reasons you may not have seen it (e.g. bulb burned out or contacts corroded). It takes a lot of current to spin the engine so your battery may have enough life left in it to light up dash lights and other little stuff but not nearly enough to engage the starter.
Does you ignition switch (key) turn easily? Spilled soda or coffee will get into the ignition lockset and make it hard to turn which also can cause it to remain in the "Start" position after you release the key. You then drive around with the starter motor constantly energized until it eventually fails. Try starting the car with jumper cables. If it turns over (whether it starts or not) then the starter motor and starting circuit are OK and the fault is in the battery or charging circuit. Keep us posted, good luck.
