Derek,
first you're to ensure that you've got proper idling speed: 850 rpm. After that you disconnect that vacuum line going to dizzy and plug a plug onto the whole opened to eliminate vacuum leak. Next you hook up your tester and point the light onto flywheel. The timing is good if you read 14 for n/a or 16 for turbo - that Fig#33 in bentley shows 0 reading (this is wrong setting - too early - for both n/a and turbo engines). If you need to adjust timing you're to rotate dizzy (a bit, in really small amounts) having its hold-down bolt loosen.
After you get proper reading:
- tighten dizzy hold-down bolt with 15nm/11ftlb torque (12 or 13mm wrench, I don't remember)
- disconnect your ignition light and put it away
- remove the plug and insert that dizzy vacuum line back onto that nipple on throttle housing
- wash your hands and you're good to go
