Surprised that he could get the car started.
At the base of the lock cylinder, there is a groove or slot that slips onto two small tabs and a push rod at the bottom of the cylinder channel. The two tabs are cast into the end of the shaft and gear mechanism that engages another gear that turns the ignition switch and swings the reverse-lock lever out of the way. Pushing the key in also drives the push rod onto a lever that depresses a push rod on the ignition switch. If the push rod is not depressed, the ignition switch won't turn.
Usually what happens is that the two small tabs on the shaft/gear thingus break off and disable the whole shebang. If you can start the car, that may not have happened in your case.
Something may have gotten misaligned in the gear housing, and the reverse lock lever that is turned by the key could have gotten jambed against the end of the shifter shaft. Try pulling the shifter back further into reverse (that pulls the shifter shaft away from the lock-out lever) and then turning the key. You may get enough clearance to disengage the lever.
This is probably not what you want to hear, but you may have to remove the entire shifter housing to properly fix this.
