rob,
You are in for a lot of work. Assuming that the diagnosis of a "Trashed differential" is correct, (and based on the details you've supplied that is a reasonable assumption), then step one is to decide whether you want to stay with an automatic transmission or change to a manual 5 speed. The transaxle (combined transmission and differential) is coming out regardless. When these units are run without lubricant in the rear end (the differential part of the transaxle) typically both the ring gear and pinion gear are destroyed. You can drop out the ring gear with the unit still in the car but the pinion gear is removed from the main case only after total removal of all the internal transmission components which must be done on a workbench (therefore there's no point in removing the ring gear and carrier until the unit is out). If you want to fix the transaxle you have you must completely disassemble it and then fit good used final drive gears, no small task. To stick with an automatic you should buy a rebuilt unit from Eriksson Industries and put it in there. You can put in a used unit but you'll be gambling a lot of R and R labor on a used, 15 or 20 year old T37. If it craps out in short order you'll cry cry cry. Going on, If you decide to replace the final drive in your current transaxle it would be very silly not to rebuild the transmission part so you'll need all the plates, gaskets, rings, seals, etc. When you fit those good used final drive gears to your unit they must be carefully shimmed for side bearing preload, pinion offset and ring gear backlash or they will make awful noise and wear out quickly. Ultimately, unless you are just stuck on an automatic, the best thing to do is get a 5 speed donor car of about the same vintage and a freshly rebuilt 5 speed (or rebuild the one in the donor car) and do the big swap. That way you'll have all the little bits you'll need right there. Dealing with a broken transaxle, manual or automatic, is one of the most labor intensive and expensive jobs you can have to do on a C900 Saab.
