Hello Fellow Saabers,
I'm Mike, and this is my first post here on TSN (although I've been lurking for a while). Just felt I should introduce myself before getting into the good stuff.
I just flew to Georgia to pick up an '87 900 SPG because I live in central NY and couldn't find any without the dreaded A-arm mount rust. Anyway I drove her 953 miles back to Ithaca last night and am glad to say I arrived without any problems.
Now, the seller claimed that the boost was "turned way down". I just assumed there was a problem with the turbo or regulatory system and he was giving me the run-around, but the price was right for an OG900 with a rust-free body/frame. So before I go looking into a rebuilt kit or switching out the turbo, I thought I would ask about how to determine the root cause of the problem.
Here's all the relevant background I can provide:
On the drive back the car would start to enter boost, and the needle would get to about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way along the yellow part of the gauge, and stop.
This morning I thought I would do a quick check and see if the wastegate was the culprit, so I disconnected the hose from the solenoid to the wastegate, started the car up, and now the needle won't enter the yellow part at all.
I connected the hose back up and started the car, expecting the needle to go 1/3 to 1/2 of the way up the yellow part of the gauge. Unfortunately, it did exactly what it did when the hose was disconnected.
Any thoughts? Did I screw something major up? What might I do next to make my 900 turbo actually a turbo?
Thanks for any help,
Mike
