I'm here to help. :-)
Definitely get another shifter and housing. Keep your stock one in case this isn't your cup of tea. Make sure the shifter you get is sound. Lots of the ones I see are either bent, cracked or broken near the welds on the pivot ball.
You can do this with a plastic-ball shifter as well, but you'll need to get an extra lower ball as you'll have to cut the one on the plastic-ball shifter. The base of the pivot ball and the lower ball are all one piece. Cut off the lower ball below the retaining pin hole. Slide the upper ball up the shaft and drill a new hole for the retaining pin and pin the new lower ball where the old one was. You can get a lower ball from a site sponsor. You can also only raise the fulcrum about 1/2" on a plastic ball shifter, because if you go any higher, the retaining pin won't pass through the channel on the reverse-lockout pin. I suppose you could cut the channel a little higher on the R-L pin if you wanted to.
I've been thinking of taking a riser to a local C-n-C shop to see if they could make them up for me (or something similar), as shifter housings are getting tough to come by. I'm also not keen on destroying them just to do this mod.
