Auto Transmission woes in the wifes Saab....

I just changed the fluid in my auto trans and tightened the front band. All seemed well on my initial test run other than the 1-2 shift was a little harsh. The 2-3 shift was silky smooth. Drove it about 30 miles with no real issue. I checked the trans fluid, and it looked to be a bit high, so I pulled half a quart off, and rechecked. Then it looked to be half a quart low :x so filled it back up with new. Then the 2-3 shift started to hold longer (until about 45mph and just under 3k rpm) and would shift hard again. Drove another 20 miles today and it seems to be getting worse....:x
When I first drained and refilled I measured it out to be 4.5 qts of fluid btwn the front and rear pan so that's what I put in. When I'm checking the fluid I'm getting wildly varying differences. If I leave the stick for more than a few seconds the oil is a few inches above the full hot mark. If I dip it and pull it right back out it barely is on the stick, other than some oil on the stick about 1/3 of the way up (next to none at the end.) If I leave it for just a second I get a read varying in the min/max mark, but only on half the stick.... wth am I doing wrong?! ;oops:
Also, I found two screws in the front pan and couldn't find where they came from...
Car has approx. 100k miles.
Edit: It also has a hard slam when you put it in D whether the trans is hot or cold.
