Hi,
I have a question about oil pressure and all that, here is the background info. I have a 92 16v with 220,000 current miles on the engine. I put a used head on the engine two or three years ago when the previous owner cracked the thing when all the oil leaked out. The car has been a strong runner for the last two to three years, but I have noticed that the engine sounds a little tappy but I'm not sure if it's a factor here, or just a old engine noise.
The other day I was in traffic and when the car sat and idled, the oil light flickered on when the RPM dipped around 700 or 900 but would shut off when I would rev it up to 1,000. I drove it home and the light didn't turn on once.
I checked the oil pressure and found it was around 39-40 psi cold around 2,000 RPM. When it was warmed up with the temp needle around mid travel, it was around 33-34 psi around 2,000 and 12-14 psi round 1,000 RPM. The car has a slight head leak and has 10,W30 in the engine at the moment but the head leak is old news.
I have checked a bunch of threads and on the topic and the oil pressure valve thing by the oil pump is the first thing I want to clean, but I'm not sure what to do. I put the car on the ramps and didn't see anything leaking around the oil pump or the oil filter/sensor area. It was a bit wet around the bottom of the head though, but that's happening for years.
Its due for a oil change so i'll put a new oil filter in and oil that's thicker than 10w30 and see how it looks. I read somewhere about some sort of alternator bolt goes into the oil casing, and if the seal is broken during a alternator swap it can cause a loss of oil pressure. I did replace my alternator several months ago but I'm not sure if I broke anything there.
Thanks in advance!
