Pete,
Without checking the manual I'd say that those pressure figures are OK. I think that maybe you just need to raise the idle speed a bit and be sure to change the oil at regular intervals. Removing and replacing the oil pressure regulator is a real PIA and, given your description of events, it's probably not a factor here. Is this car turbo charged? Turbo chargers increase the breakdown rate of the engine oil and it's particularly important to change the oil (and filter) on schedule. Top end tapping is typically a sticky lifter and that is most often the result of poor maintenance (old oil). Very often just getting the car back on regular oil changes will free up a sticky lifter and keep them quiet. Otherwise, before changing the oil, you can replace one quart of engine oil with ATF and see if that does the trick. You don't want to rev or load the engine while that ATF is in there, just warm it up and let it idle for a bit then change the oil. Keep in mind that the fuel injectors make a clicking noise. You can't cause an oil leak on a B202 engine by swapping the alternator.
