What year & motor??? Posted by Larry West [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Drivers side motor mount....not bad, replace anyway?, saaboc, Sun, 18 Jul 2010 12:56:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Saab used two kinds of mounts: Standard rubber mounts for 8 valves and some early 16 valves, and "hydraulic" mounts for most of the 16 valves.
The rubber ones are easy to change, even the driver side one.
The hydraulic on the driver side is a royal PITA. I told myself, after doing one once - and finding out that it was just fine - that I'd never again attempt it without complete knowledge that it had failed, OR the motor was completely out of the car for another job.
I don't recall that removing the alternator helped access in any way. The bolts you need to get to are virtually inaccessible, unless you have saintlike patience, very small and very strong fingers, and flexible extensions the likes of which I don't think have been invented yet...
Add to that the hydraulic mount is so large that it is very difficult to get the needed access to remove the mount once you've unbolted it, so you end up removing the plate from the block...
Usually, I'd say some jobs are worth the hassle for the knowledge that you won't have to do it for a VERY long time again. Not this one. The left motor mount on a C900 does little more than support the motor. On acceleration, it'll get squished, taking the compression load of the motor as it twists in reaction to the crank torque. The right one, OTOH, takes the tension load, breaks much more often, and is easy to replace.
My advice would be: If it's an 8v with rubber mounts, change it. If its a 16v with hydraulic mounts, leave it be. It'll probably outlast your ownership of the car...
