I took the hydraulic mount out as I changed it to Brad's solid mount. There was a broken bolt on the bracket, so the repairs came in handy at the time. The rubber material had turned into a goo from sloppy oil changes, so it was already collapsed, and non functional. It does just sit there, but when it is fresh, the hydraulic nature of the mount forces the cushioning oil to the bottom. At least that is the way it was described to me.
If you want some good ones, I have about three left over :-)
Make sure the bolts from below are tightened up well into the mount -- I have seen them missing completely from the mount, and the engine then moves around, thereby allowing the transmission to slip out of gear if it is a manual gearbox.
