check battery and charging first... Posted by walt [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: 1990 900S bad idle & stalling when gas pedal pressed., BAAB ![]() ![]() |
Charging voltage from engine running measured at battery should be around 14 volts. You may just have a worn out battery that just can't hold a full charge any longer. If you put battery on a controlled slow charger for a few hours, then let it rest for a few hours, it should be around 12.6 volts resting voltage if it's good. Check that thick ground wire from alternator to alternator mounting bolt is intact. Also check that charging lamp illuminates before starting, then goes out after engine starts. If it never illuminates, then check its green/white wire attachment on back of alternator. Check alternator charging lamp is not blown out by grounding the green/white wire, which should light the bulb with ignition on but engine not running. The 2 watt bulb (don't use smaller wattage) can be accessed through left side dash speaker cover. If voltage still is low, a new brush/regulator set should be tried. If pulley/belts are squealing on startup and belts are not loose, the harmonic balancer pulley may be slipping enough to cause low charging voltage (and engine overheating too.) If you plan to fix your C900, consider getting a Bentley Saab 900 workshop manual.
