start. When you say you rotated until you saw 30, that was the first number you saw, right? I would first check the firing order, as the bently has it wrong (especially regarding placement of number 1).
Then, rotate engine to TDC (from the flywheel markings), and see if the rotor arm is pointing at the #1 post on the distributor. If it is way off, rotate the dizzy until it is very close, then fire her up and try to time it.
If things are still funky, i have to recommend that you pull the valve cover and triple check the timing again (valve timing). I say triple check because i have been through this so many times and that valve timing can really throw you through a loop.
