painting rims question (Long, sorry) Posted by ZAAB [Email] ![]() ![]() |
So I had a ton of issues with my first attempt at spraying my rims with Wurth silver wheel paint. Blobby out of the can, inconsistent, etc...
So I am amidst the second round with a different lot # of paint. same brand.
There is a lot of solid aluminum in the spray, creating a textured layer in this set of paint. the textured aspect of the spray comes off easily after I spray and allow it to dry. The textured aluminum fleck is deep, like 1-2mm (not actually measured).
Should I try to capture this texture with the gloss clear coat, or should I sand it down to smooth? If I sand it down (honestly, a paper towel would brush it off), do I then perform a final wicked light coat?
I have read that metallic paints should not be sanded down at the final coat to preserve their shine better. The original finish was smooth gloss coated, but sparkly underneath. Is that the texture covered by the gloss? or is the sparkle going to be apparent if I knock off that textured aluminum?
It is annoying because it is SO easy to screw up the textured layer (IF I am going to want to keep it).
Thanks
Z
