Yes, I'd check for ignition switch gone bad - discussed within last couple days with links

In particular, I'd suspect an open/faulty circuit between terminals 30 and 50 with what you've described. You can check for continuity - if you don't have a Bentley manual - the switch looks like the pic. and is forward of the key assembly. Terminal 50 is at 12 oclock and 30 at about 1:30. It's a cheap part, but a pain to change.
Wouldn't hurt to liberally spray elec component cleaner into any openings of the switch first - it's worked for me on lots of Saab switches. Further, it sounds like you're getting spark on what must be the last bit of contact of that circuit.
I'll bet on the switch, especially if you've had it running after the switchover. If you never did there's more to talk about.
Also if it's an autobox - there's the safety switch to consider.
