but before turning the engine over you may want to squirt some penetrant down the spark plug holes to loosen the rings if they're rusted to the cylinders. follow that with a generous dose of oil to lube things up again afterwards.
keep the plugs out and the coil disconnected if you crank it on starter. i would suggest turning it by hand first if you can, using a socket on the crank bolt. make sure you turn in direction of firing, so not to loosen bolt.
if you get it to turn over on starter with no broken rings or other horrible sounds, put rags over spark plug holes to catch the oil/penetrant squirting out. if you do get it turning over, as soon as it cranks, or catches, stop. at that point change the oil to get rid of stuff that may have leaked past rings. also would suggest pouring a quart of oil over rockers to lube them up when cranking cuz will take pump time to get oil to top of engine.
hopefully you've had the car in neutral, otherwise you may find your clutch frozen engaged. you will probably find both brake and clutch m/c empty as seals have failed and hydraulics dribbled away. so keep front and rear clear when cranking!
ok, so a garage is ok, that's good. a tarp is bad, still shows the car shape. what about the tarp garage? these guys are expensive, but something along these lines http://www.screen-house.com/ do_it_yourself _garage_kits.htm (no spaces between any words). pep boys sells them, as does sears i'm sure.
mark :-)
