Head Rest removal

Hi,
I am planning for the re-skinning of my driver's side seat back in my 87 convertible. I have the skin and the first think I attempted was to remove the head rest. I have failed miserably. How is this done? With other cars it seemed simple but although there are spring clips which should release the shaft, they do not in mine.
So, please let me know the trick and, if there are other things that I should know, please let me know.
I have checked this site for "head rest" and come up blank.
