I will add that you have to really make sure it is ALL the way into third. Take the coupler loose and with your best force make sure that the shift rod going into the transmission is ALL the way into third. Then, GENTLY put the shift coupling on the shaft liberally loose. Go inside the cockpit and put the drill rod through the hole in shift housing through into the shift rod trapping it front to rear. Then very carefully not to move the rod on the transmission CLAMP the rod.
The tool on the differential that Notnoel mentioned is a special fixture to force the shift rod to STAY all the way in third while all this is being fiddled with.....
Also, you have to adjust the height of the reverse lockout on the shifter itself. There is a measurement in the book.
Once you follow the rigging procedure, it should go into reverse ( or any gear for that matter ) without difficulty. If there is difficultly, then you have to isolate the problem further. Good luck!
