If you are seeing copper in the engine compartment then it sounds like a cobbled 'U' to exclude the heat system. In LA probably done to solve leaking heater valve. Heat valve should show as two hose connections just thru the firewallinto the engine compartment below the speaker location. If the hoses that once attached have not been shortened for your bypass then you may be good to go with only a new heater valve and reattaching the hoses. Below the speaker opening is the heat control valve - not a bypass. Late c900's had a valve in the engine compartment before the firewall that allowed some flow with the heat control off.
Find a good Saab tech - heat valve R&R is pretty straightforward if you know what you are doing.
