Well, I pulled the head. The gasket was in fine shape, but I think it was leaking. When I loosened the head bolts, it took barely any effort. Not like heads I've done in the past. There was also no squish mark/indentation at the cylinder or block. The head and block were perfectly flat, like just-milled. I'm guessing that the last owner must have gotten the HG replaced and it wasn't torqued properly. Also had an exterior oil leak near the front.
The exhaust ports and the valve guides are caked with burnt and wet oil, so I suspect the valve seals were also bad, although the intake side looked fine--strange. Exhaust manifold also had oil in it. Top of the pistons are black.
Now for the bad news... This project has turned into an engine pull. I broke the upper chain guide when trying to get the cam sprocket nut loose. I hope the weather holds out for me. Not looking forward to doing this in the cold.
